Guidelines for Fostering Dogs

Animals & Pets General
Hi there!
As far as the limit on dogs and fostering there are some guidelines to allow a home with 3 dogs to foster or watch another pet for a period of time:
- Puppies under 4 months
- They can foster any number of puppies under 4 months of age as dogs do not count towards the limit until they reach 4 months old
- Once the puppies reach 4 months old they are subject to the rules for dogs over 4 months old.
- Dogs over the age of 4 months
- A dog over 4 months old can be fostered for up to 30 days in a home that is already at the 3 dog limit
i. This is limited to 30 days in a 6 months period. They would need to wait 5 more months before being able to foster another dog.
- If they would like to foster a dog over 4 months for longer than the 30 day period they would need to apply for and be approved for a variance permit with Washoe County Regional Animal Services
- There is a $50 initial fee, then a $35 annual fee for each year the permit is renewed.
- More information can be found here: https://www.washoecounty.gov/animal/permits/variance_permit.php
I am happy to answer any additional questions you may have!
