Microchipping Information

Washoe County Regional Animal Services believes that microchipping is your pet's best chance of being returned home should it ever become lost or stolen. Microchipped pets can be scanned in the field and returned to their homes without ever having to be brought into the shelter.

WCRAS uses 24 Petwatch microchips and more information for these microchips can be found on the 24 Petwatch website.

Microchipping is done by injecting a small chip, the size of a grain of rice, under the skin between the shoulder blades. It only takes a few minutes to complete and last for the life of the pet. WCRAS uses HomeAgain microchips that are easily read by shelters and veterinarians. For more information about microchipping visit the American Veterinary Medical Foundation website.

Pets microchipped at WCRAS will be registered in both the local WCRAS database and the 24 Petwatch national database for free.

As of June 1, 2021, all Washoe County residents are able to get their pets microchipped free of charge! Mon-Fri 8am-5pm and Sat 9am-3pm. No appointment needed!
